The Pier has always been a draw for kids of all ages! We remember all the rides so well! We loved going on the Ghost train, the dodgems, the twister, and loads of other rides over the years.

A favourite of every family - the dodgems have been on Walton Pier since approximately 1979. and have moved around the pier quite a few times over the years, and are still there to be enjoyed today!

Mirror Maze

Walton Pier's original Mirror Maze - if you were clever you looked at the floor and could work your way out - unfortunately that's something we learnt only when we were older and the recipient of many a bashed nose!

Morgana Fortune Teller

The large blue Morgana Fortune Teller arcade machine stood near the entrance to Walton Pier during the 70s and 80s. When you inserted a coin, Morgana came to life through some magical projections.

Mr Fun

Mr Fun was the friendly face and guarantee of a good time for Walton and Clacton Piers in the 60s and 70s. He appeared on slot machines, badges and pier frontage and signage everywhere!

New Walton Pier

This design is inspired by an old 1950s/60s leaflet design - at the time there would have been a big wheel on the pier, and possibly early rides like the waltzer, the original victorian gallopers, and a speedway.

Pier Train

The little engine named 'Dreadnought' worked Walton pier from 1948-78 - running holiday makers up and down the pier. We love his happy, smiley face, so had to include him in our Pier collection.

Roller Ghoster Famous Faces

Walton's ghost train - was host to a range of 'famous' faces on its doors during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The majority of these designs were still about in the 1980s, but some are even earlier.

This has been part of the pier since the 1930s - offering teas and luncheons, and dancing nightly! You can still find pieces of the blue and white pier tearoom china washed up on the beach from time-to-time

The pier's old Supercar-manufactured ghost train ride from the 60s got a Wild West makeover in 2005 and remained there until 2021 when it was rumoured to have gone to join Gavin and Stacey in Barry Island!

This elaborate hand-painted Twister design from Walton Pier hailed from 1972 - where it stayed until 2021 when it was sold to Bloomfield's Amusements - a lovely traditional fairground.

Waltzer

Another favourite, this is the 2nd waltzer at Walton pier; the original - based there since 1949 was sold to Casino Funfair at Canvey Island in 1973. The current Hardrock Waltzer has been there since 1974.

The Original Walton Pier Bowl

Opened in 1964 and managed by well-known bowler (and writer for Tenpin Monthly magazine) Keith Hale. The Pier Bowl had a family atmosphere with a bar, coffee shop and pro-shop which sold precision drilled bowling balls.

The Gallopers

There have been two sets of gallopers in Walton Pier's history. The original Victorian one was sited on the pier from 1948 until 2005 (then sold to Yesterday's World Museum) The most recent one hailed from 2006 until 2021.

Commemorates 50 years of Walton Pier Bowl from its heyday in the early 1960's when it joined a wave of interest in the new sport and leisure activity of tenpin bowling in the United Kingdom.

Author Steven Walker has generously donated all proceeds from the sale of this book to go to Walton Food Bank.
